CHEMISTRY SURVEY SITE Frequently Asked Questions |
|||||
Note: for newcomers to the computer world FAQ=Frequently Asked Question FAQ#1. What is the purpose of this site? Answer: I wanted to provide a site where students could look up extra information that would be interesting and understandable to a student enrolled in a college chemistry survey course. (But I also ran across some other good stuff I couldn't leave out). To those of you who are my students: Welcome to the site! To everyone else, I hope you find something of interest as well. This site is presently under construction so bear with me while I try to make it more useful. FAQ#2. How do I use this site? First select the broad area you are interested in: General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, or Biochemistry. When you get to the page that corresponds to the branch of Chemistry you want to explore, you can use one of two approaches for further searching. You can select an area within that branch (eg. an area of interest within Organic Chemistry such as benzene ring structure & aromatic compounds) by selecting the corresponding chapter of the textbook used in my CHEM111 or CHEM112 class. If you are not enrolled in my class or don't have your textbook with you, you can look at the chapter headings and subheadings to see what sort of links will be featured for each chapter. FAQ#3. Will I be able to understand the material that the links lead me to? This site was meant to be a guide to sites that would be understandable to those students who have taken or are taking a non-majors college course in General, Organic and Biochemistry. Occasionally sites will be included which are pitched to a chemistry major and would be difficult for the survey student to benefit from and I will try to indicate that in my description of the site. Some sites are pitched to practicing chemists or to chemistry majors but nevertheless provide useful and understandable information in addition to more in-depth information that may be over your head. Just ignore the parts you can't follow and use the parts you like. Some sites may be included that are pitched to high school students or even elementary students. These may be very simple but sometimes might be just the bridge to understanding that you need -- or might be humorous and good for a smile. And you can refer your children to them. |
